Grapes for this Mendocino Zinfandel come from the 26 miles of benchland that stretches from the Redwood Valley south to the Sanel Valley, separated from the Pacific coast by the coastal range. This provides the ideal climate for the ripeness that brings big raspberry and black pepper spice to the forefront. Individual lots are aged in American and French oak wine barrels before a final aging in bourbon barrels, adding a unique charred vanilla and dried herb flavor.
We release 1000 Stories Zinfandel in batches to reflect a unique mix of grape varieties, vineyards, and bourbon barrels–no two batches are the same. Batch 56, which marries grapes grown throughout California in 2017’s warm and rainy climate, shows ripe, abundant fruit and spice. A bouquet of sugar plum, sun-drenched mission figs and cardamom gives way to the blueberry compote, cinnamon and earthy cocoa on the palate. This Zinfandel is a classic example of the variety’s piquant, lush character, which, emphasized by time in our signature bourbon barrels, finishes with smoky, spiced notes.
